HistoricalKyrenia (Girne)
Bellapais Abbey
A 13th-century Gothic abbey standing improbably intact on a mountain terrace above Kyrenia, looking down over cypress trees to the sea. Lawrence Durrell lived — and wrote Bitter Lemons — in the village behind it, and the whole place still moves at his pace. The cloister is the star: pale arches, one giant cypress, silence. The lanes above hide some lovely slow lunches.
