Limassol Castle & old town
A squat, stubborn medieval castle tucked into the lanes of Limassol's old town, a block back from the harbour. The building you see was rebuilt around 1590 under the Ottomans, but the ground is far older, and legend ties this patch of it to the 1191 wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre on his way to the Crusades. Inside is now the Cyprus Medieval Museum — armour, tombstones, cannon and coins in cool vaulted rooms — and you can climb to the roof for a view over the terracotta tangle of the old quarter. Compact, and a good hour out of the heat.
